I recently worked with the team from BMC Communications in New York to design and produce a site for cancer survivors. Due to the sensitive nature of the material, we wanted to present the core information in the form of stories from the people themselves. While this site is of interest to a very small number of readers, the information within it is critical. It has the potential to impact the personal and professional lives of all involved.

The design of the site went through several rounds because we wanted to get the correct voice. A few of the passes at a home page design are in the thumbnails below. Often times these messages are presented with pristine stock images and a squeaky clean representation of their posed and artificial subjects. The trick here was to meet with, interview and photograph the actual people confronting these circumstances.

Clearly this gives the information on the site considerable weight. In addition, we wanted to serve a community of people that are looking everywhere they can for answers and information.
